WE WELCOME to District 39-W the new clubs of Eagle and Murtaugh. It is always heart warming to see other people get the spirit of Lionism and particularly when groups of service minded men band together doing things for their communities they could not do as individuals. Lions International is the largest Service Organization in the world with over 15,000 clubs, such as yours, and over 600,000 members, such as your. However, the size of your International Association should not overwhelm you. Neither can you lean on these facts to make your clubs a success. If your clubs are successful in the field of service, each of your members will have to make his membership a personal thing. He will benefit most from personal satisfaction he enjoys in the fellowship of your club -- and this comes from doing things for others, as a club, that they cannot do for themselves. You will not be able to spend the rewards you receive but everyone will know as they will be able to see it in your smile, or the way you walk, because you have done something for someone else, that brought you personal satisfaction. Be proud of belonging to the greatest organization of service minded men on earth. Give your time, efforts and resources in the satisfying work of Lionism and with that bright new emblem on your lapel, you will never walk alone. This is a real good time of year to start a new club. You will not fail, if you keep the spirit of the Holiday Season with you throughout the year. This is the spirit of Lionism. The Burley Club sends its greetings and best wishes to you and stands ready to help you in any way it can and should you come to Burley you have a standing invitation to break bread with us. May each and everyone of you enjoy a long and satisfying membership in your club and may your club grow and prosper through the years to come.
Holly was originally believed to be magic. Thorny holly hung in the house, meant the husband would rule thru the year -- smooth holly meant the wife would rule.
LIVE, INC. & LIONS MEET Sunday may seem like a poor day for a Lions meeting, but when it involves LIVE INC., a good representation of Lions can be counted upon to appear. December 4th was such a day when 19 Lions representing practically all of the Magic Valley clubs and LIVE officers met to discuss and plan a spring "Broom Sale" for this area. Mr. O.V. Wheeler, Boise, president of LIVE, pointed out the difficulty in keeping the employees operating at maximum efficiency without all the Lions clubs participating in sales. "LIVE" originally was conceived and sponsored by the Downtown Boise Lions Club in 1949, but it was not until the fall of 1955, when Burley Lions sponsored the first sale that it became evident that we had a great sales organization in the Lions Clubs of Idaho," Wheeler added. Burley Lions were represented at this meeting by Jim Dumas, Ed Fronk and myself. Lion Ed, if you will remember, was club president and chairman of the most successful sale ever conducted for LIVE and his comments were very well received by those attending the meeting. Lion Jim and I pointed out that our directors felt that it would be better to have a really good sale every other year than a poor one each year. However, the outcome of the meeting was that a sale is desperately needed every year until such time as Eastern Idaho Lions join in for a substantial sale in their area. Mr. Wheeler and the other directors made a sincere appeal to the Burley Club to help promote a Magic Valley sale again next spring. The date set for the sale is March 20th. It is my thought that we might, if enough members are in full accord, produce some fair results with a sale covering only the rural areas around Burley. Our recently completed road sign project would be of considerable help if this country sale were undertaken, and it would let LIVE include the Burley club with their advertising for the spring sale. This would leave Burley city open for a good sale again a year from next March. Burley club members can again be proud of the sale last spring. We sold more for LIVE than any other club in the district. This is in spite of Lion Ed's idea that all the officers do is stand around where it is warm drinking coffee while the membership gets out in the cold selling brooms, rugs and mats for LIVE. (Read Nov. issue "Lioneer") It just means that we have a wonderful, hard-working group of members. In the spring sale, the Burley group accounted for approximately 25% of the gross to LIVE with a check of over $1,200.00.
A service club exists to serve the community, and the Burley Lions Club can spell that service with a capitol "S". No service club in the state can match our record of accomplishments. This record can be attributed to just two things -- active membership and adequate fund raising! The Burley Lions club has always been outstanding in its ability to raise funds of special projects or for general service to the community, but our main fund-raising project which provides our most reliable source of funds for our many civic projects is the old stand-by -- the annual Fair book. The Fair Book project has done more to establish the Lions Club as Burley's most active and best known service club than any other activity of the club, and it therefore deserves our best planning efforts to make it a success every year. And this brings up the main point of this article -- we should start planning right now for next year's Fair Book instead of leaving it all for those last few hectic weeks. Fair book Publications Chairman, Don Norton, can take care of the preliminary details by getting his committee together right after the Christmas holidays, select a theme for the book, and start someone on the story writing job. Pictures always take time, but if a theme is agreed upon now, we have several months to collect suitable pictures. Other details such as cover stock and cover design can also be settled, and a "mock-up" of the book started. Advertising Chairman, Jim Lynch, should also get his committee together soon. There is a lot of work to be done on bringing the list of businesses up to date, establishing the sales routes, checking supplies, etc. To sum it all up, the Fair Book is our biggest project and best fund raiser. It deserves our best efforts, and we can only do our best starting our planning early.
The McCoys and the Hatfields laid aside their feuding long enough to stage a bang-up party for ladies night on December 10. the blackbearded boys spared no effort to create the atmosphere of Southern hospitality as it done in Hillbilly country. It was an informal dress affair in which proper attired was patched overalls and gingham dresses. The M.C.'s, Woody Kerbel and Charles Skagg, had rip-snorting stories to match the theme. Another feature of the program was the singing of the three pretty Udy girls from Malta. They are the daughters of Lion and Lioness Orval Udy. Really something to be proud of. The evening was capped by dancing to Wayne Skeem's orchestra. Thanks and expressions of appreciation to the various committees for a big affair are surely in order.
Lion Education Committee chairman, Les Morgan, says a Lion is never too old to learn. Suspecting a lot of us have forgotten the orientation we received at the time of our induction into the club a refresher course is being given to all Lions. Instead of orienting only the new members the committee has planned a program that will be of interest and benefit for all members.
It is with a great deal of pleasure for the staff of the LIONEER to announce that Lion Doc Kircher has been assigned by President Truman to help out with the publication of your paper. We are happy to welcome Lion Doc to our harried group and if his job doesn't give him ulcers we are sure the combination of that and being a member of our staff sure will. We promise to relieve you of several nights and Sundays worth of spare time each month--nothing more.

Did it ever occur to you that some of our best moments come when we are alone with our thoughts, after reading a good book or article, after listening to a beautiful piece of music, after listening to a good poem, or reflecting on a good deed that made us no monetary return or even cost us money? This is the time of year when, if we take the time, there is an abundance of that which we can really enjoy. Christmas has inspired more good music, more poetry, and more of the spirit of good things that bring good will to men than any time of the year. These are the things that deal with the heart, soul and imagination and swell within us that which makes the noblest thoughts and emotions. During this month the air will be filled with sounds reflecting from that night long ago when the bright star shone on a manger in Bethlehem. Sounds that will continue to echo until the end of time. they will continue because they are reflections of the teachings of the Master, who in such a short life on this earth affected the life and mind of so many. How appropriate it is that the good things of life are identified with religion. Songs, poetry, good deeds and all things of this season are the things that are good in life. While we reflect let us not overlook the good things of Lionism. Who can deny that Lionism is part of our religious life? It is a religion that has no sectarian line. Catholic, Protestant, Jew, and Mormon join hands in doing good for the needy, underprivileged and the community as a whole in a very Christian like manner. Those who take an active part in their club, some times unknowingly have their eye on the same star that shone over Bethlehem so many years ago. In a world that cries for peace, the joining together of clubs in over one hundred nations of the earth exerts an influence far greater than can be measured. Those leaders such as Alexander the Great, Caesar, Genghis Khan, Hitler have exerted an influence on the world that has their fleeting moments that now are remembered only by those who have studied history books but the influence of Lionism is becoming known and felt in all the world and is a star that shines when the skies are obscured by the clouds of selfishness. There are those who may not be good church goers but their humility and service to mankind through their Lions club will at some time say, "For all that has been done for me and mine, I sincerely and humbly thank Thee, Lord". In gratitude for the good things which we enjoy we can in part return thru service to those less fortunate than we. Let our motto, "WE SERVE", be not an empty phrase but an expression of gratitude, a token repayment for the good things with which we have been blessed. Think that we live in a land which we did not conquer, a city we did not build, we drink from wells we did not dig, we live in freedom which we did not conceive. We live from food we did not plant and feed our soul from a philosophy from He who was the Servant of all. May we pause at this Christmas season, and ask ourselves if we have given, in part, a portion of which we have received.

On Sunday December 4th at Burley, Live Inc. Board of Directors held a meeting at which the presidents of each club in the Zone were invited. Present were representatives of the Boise Downtown Club, both Twin Falls clubs, Buhl, Paul, Burley, Jerome and the Rupert club. The meeting was conducted by President Bud Wheeler, Boise. Several years ago a resolution was passed at the District Lions convention in Sun Valley that Live, inc. would be a state wide project of the Idaho Lions Clubs. The purpose of the Burley meeting was to acquaint the present officers with the project and to report on its progress together with attention to present problems. For the benefit of Lions who have become members since that time we met forth here a short history of Live, Inc. According to present state laws there is no way that rehabilitation facilities for the handicapped can be financed by the state of Idaho. Prior to 1949 the state would, in isolated cases send people out of the state, primarily to Oregon, for training in their schools. At that time a small group of Boise businessmen and been discussing the problem and decided that something should be done about it. With little assistance, Live, inc., a non-profit organization was chartered, and in 1949 it was started with two people. The idea was to train the handicapped to make their own way rather than making it a permanent shelter. It has progressed until now they have 48 people in training at the present time. with a record of about 70 persons having been trained and placed in self supporting jobs. Their biggest problem has always been and at present is, the sale of the goods produced. With handicapped persons production is slow even at best and with new trainees even slower, making productions costs higher than will allow their goods to be placed on the wholesale market. Consequently it must be sold at retail. In 1955 the Burley Lions Club pledged themselves to make a contribution to the New school for Cerebral Palsy that was being started in Burley. At that time the Board of Directors decided that rather than to sell light globes or some such article to raise the necessary funds they would try Live, Inc. products and give help on both ends. The project was very successful in itself and set a pattern for the other Lions Clubs in the State. That year there were two other sales held in the Boise region. Now it is a yearly project that last year more than $15,000 worth of Live, Inc. products were sold. The directors were high in their praise of the Burley Club for starting the idea and brought out that the amount of goods sold by Burley at each drive was always at the top of the list of all clubs participating. They stated that this method of disposing of their goods was directly responsible for the expansion of their project. Last year the Zone in the Boise area had 100% participation of clubs in the sale. the Magic Valley zone fell down quite a ways below that record but plans were laid for a valley wide sale to be held on March 20, 1961 and strong efforts will be made to have every club participate. Vice-Presidents Glen Kunau and Jim Dumas attended the meeting and promised to ask the Burley board of Directors to reconsider their decision to have no sale this year. It was interesting to see the concern expressed by Live directors when they were told of the decision of our board not to have a sale. they could not comprehend that the club that had started the project and had the most success at it would drop out. Besides the loss of the sale of merchandise they felt a blow would be dealt to the prestige of the project. Again your LIONEER editors ask the board to reconsider. Perhaps having the sale into next year would clear the way for a reversal of their decision. It was also interesting to note that three clubs had turned their entire gain from the sales back to Live and that about twelve clubs had made contributions direct to them. they appreciated it very much. Of the original Live, Inc. board of directors all are still there with one exception. We take this opportunity to commend these dedicated men who have taken so much of their time and money to help those so much in need. These are the kind of men to whom "WE SERVE" has a real meaning. When we learn that one man who had been in the State Hospital at Nampa for 26 years was taken into the school for six months then was able to go to work in private industry on his own we know for sure they are doing a wonderful service. If we as Lions are to take credit for the project we MUST do our share to perpetuate it. On your next trip to Boise, take time out to visit their workshop and find out firsthand about the project of the Idaho Lions. In your editor's fifteen years of Lionism I can think of no project where we are so welcome in the homes of Burley nor can we think of a project where the members of the club are drawn together more closely. When 39-E can be sold on the deal and the Magic Valley clubs decide to participate 100% the school can continue to expand as it should. As good Lions we urge you to go all out whenever you can for this worth while organization.
The original Christmas tree used by the Egyptians was a date palm, which puts forth a shoot a month, the twelve shoots signifying a completed year.
Only 8 shopping days until Christmas-- and only a few months until the 1961 Fair Book will have to be ready for publication. with the dates for the Fair being advanced to the early part of August, all plans and activities involved in producing the Fair Book must be accelerated also. Your editors have heard comments concerning the need for continuing the documentary and historical themes as in the past. One suggestion offered which appealed to us is the history of the development of the potato industry from the earliest known patch of potatoes raised commercially to the present situation of vast acreages and tons of spuds processed daily in this area. Certainly there are still some old-timers around who can supply information about the industry in its infancy -- if they are contacted early enough before the publication deadline. Undoubtedly there are old photographs available also -- but again time is needed to find them and dig them out. A theme set in advance of the advertizing campaign should be an added incentive for the advertizers to participate in this worthwhile community project. Our recommendation to the Fair Book publication Committee therefore is to save themselves a lot of hard work and last minute rush by getting started early on the theme for 1961. Remember there are only 8 shopping days until Christmas, and ---------.
Lioness Theo Hollinger reports that she talked to Holley by telephone Sunday night. He is doing well, but is bored with being so inactive. He looks forward to the mail each day, so all you Lions can help his moral by dropping him a line now and then. To you, Holley, best wishes from the staff of the Lioneer. We are looking forward to your recovery and association again at Club.
Mistletoe was the ancient symbol of Brotherly love. The kiss began as a "Kiss of Peace". A kiss is supposed to be given for each berry on the spray.
An individual's history of activities and service as a Lion should be one of his primary qualifications for candidacy to the office of District Governor. We believe the record of Fred W. Allen speaks for his election as evidenced by this history of Fred's activities in his Club, Zone and district.
1948 - Inducted into the Burley Lion Club Fred has also opened the doors of Lionism to three new members and received a Key on May 31, 1951. On August 19, 1960, Lion Fred was awarded a 10 year 100% attendance Certificate and a 10 year Monarch Award. What better record of service could be accumulated in a 12 year span to justify your support in the election of Lion Fred W. Allen as District Governor of 39-W
This Lion was born in Washington County, Oklahoma July 1, 1918. The family moved to Burley, Idaho on July 4, 1930. He graduated from Burley High School and farmed in the view area until after World War II, when he bought an auto wreckage east of Burley. He took up the study of electronics and one year before he sold the auto wreckage, he began to deal in TV business in Burley, Elko and Wells, Nevada. He was married in 1942 and has three sons, one stepson and two grandchildren. He is a Past Noble Grand of the IOOF Lodge and Past Master of Claremont Grange. His favorite past time is reading and he spends much time reading the Bible, religious works, electronic magazines and keeping up with current world affairs. He is a member of the Burley Methodist Church and sings in the choir. Also he works with the Young Married Couples prayer group.
![]() The Officers and Board of Directors want to use this space to wish all Lions and their families everywhere a most joyous Holiday Season. We hope that while you are enjoying your gifts and presents that you will take time to thrill at the meaning of Christmas and translate this thrill into a very warm love and affection for all your fellow men, your families, your home, your town and the Country we live in. Lots rededicate ourselves to the task of keeping our country strong by working harder and promoting our motto "We Serve" more enthusiastically. Remember that all good and perfect gifts are from above and should be shared with others. May the Peace and Joy of Christmas be with you all throughout the coming New Year.
