Since the October issue of the Lioneer was distributed the Burley Lions have been most active in Committee work and Club visitations. Last Saturday night Zone Chairman, Fred Allen, myself and our wives went to the Jerome Club's annual charter night. We had a very nice dinner, danced for awhile and visited with some of the other club representatives in the Valley. District Governor Stan Kiem was there with his wife. He spoke during the program. The attendance was not very good. The only clubs represented were Jerome, Gooding, Twin Falls and Burley. Part of the reason for this was that Jerome did not get the notices out until about 10 days before the meeting. This is not notice enough to be able to plan ahead. At this meeting, Ed Bossard, Bob Baker's campaign manager was there and passed out some literature about Bob pertaining to his campaign for District Governor. The brochure is titled "Let's take a Look at the Record". It has Bob's picture in it looking through a phonograph record and goes on to give Bob's record in Lionism. Lioness Bea had the classic remark of the evening when she said, "Now that you've heard the flip side - let's hear the hit side", referring to, of course, her own Lion Fred's record in Lionism. I had the pleasure of introducing the Burley delegation --and introduced Fred as the next District Governor of District 39-W. Lion Glen Kunau had a similar experience at Malta on the same night at their Wild Game Feed. The Burley Club had 5 or 6 couples at this event. His campaign speech for Fred was a little more tense because in the audience was Lion Bob himself. This campaign has all the early signs of being a hot one. Our November directors Meeting was held at Lion Jim Dumas's house on the 8th. After the normal discussions on finances - delinquent dues - delinquent attendance - membership - projects and etc., it was most interesting to hear Roy Harris, Chairman of the Eyesight Committee, report that all the children in the Declo Schools first 8 grades had been given the Lions screening test. Mrs. Warwood is now reaching out into the county and hopes to complete the tests by January. Lion Jim Dumas, 3rd Vice President, in charge of the Clubs Special Activities Committee has been trying to come up with another money making project for some time this Winter. If you have any ideas -- see Lion Jim -. The Board is thinking of sponsoring a Basketball Game - similar to the Harlam Globetrotters. Whatta you think??? Last Monday night, Secretary, Jerry Anderson, Zone Chairman, Fred and I went to Twin Falls to a Zone Meeting. The meeting was attended by all Presidents and Secretaries in the Zone except the new Murtaugh Club. This Club will receive its Charter on November 26th. I hope we will have several people who will want to go. Burley is still the best Club in the District - but we have to keep working to hold that position - we didn't get that way by accident and we can't hold it by accident. The other clubs are working - making money on one hand and spending it on most worthy community services on the other. That's what gives the Lions the reputation of being the greatest service organization in the world. We should all be proud that we are Lions - 'WE SERVE'.
THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH As I was sorting through my file of Lions Club materials the other night I ran into a document I have never more than looked at for the many years I have been a Lion. It should be and will be framed and hung on the wall of my office where I can re-read it on occasion to refresh my memory of one of the basic aims of Lionism that has, to my memory, ever been brought to the attention of the Burley Lions. It is presented to every new Lion upon induction and I wonder how many have ever taken the time to read it in its entirety and to soak up the true meaning therein. I refer to the Lions Code of Ethics. We feel that it should be reprinted and that each of you take time to read it. There is much wisdom contained in its few lines. "To show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service. To seek success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part. To remember that in building my business it is not necessary to tear down another; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to my self. Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards my fellow men, to resolve such doubt against myself. To hold friendship as an end and not a means. to hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one to another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given. Always to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state and my community, and to give to them my unswerving loyalty in word, act and deed. To give them freely of my time, labor and means. To aid my fellow men by giving sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy. To be careful with my criticisms and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy." We could do nothing better than to urge each of you to dig into your papers and find this noble document, frame it and put it on the wall of your office as a reminder to yourself and for those who may perchance take the time to read it. It may gain you a friend.
Peep from the Veep----
PEEEP!
It is not what men eat but what they digest that makes them strong; not what we gain, but what we save that makes us rich; not what we read, but what we remember that makes us learn; and not what we preach, but what we practice that makes us Christians. --(Francis Bacon)
The Burley Lions join in wishing Lion Lloyd Hollinger all the best in his stay at the Veterans Hospital in Walla Walla, Washington. We were sorry to hear Lion President Truman's announcement in our last Lions meeting and wish Lion Lloyd a speedy recovery. He will probably be so used to loafing by the time he gets home he won't be much good to his business and I'll bet he is surprised at how good his shop force can do without him. Looks to me like his Reminder is bigger since he left than it was when he was here. We're all pulling for you to make a fast recovery Lloyd and we will see to it that you get each copy of the Lioneer so you can keep up with the doings of the club.
Many times we have been told by visitors to the weekly meeting of the Burley Lions Club that they thought the club was holding something special on that day judging from the attendance. Many Lions from other clubs have made special visitations because they did not believe we had the attendance we claimed. Frankly it has never ceased to amaze your editors that week after week, year after year, attendance consistantly hovers around the 85% mark at each meeting. The last few months it has been better than that. Looks like we will have to do one of three things, quit taking in new members, invent a way to get rid of some of them, or get a bigger meeting place. Last week I was late and had a choice of the two "in the corner" chairs where I could neither see nor hear the president or the guest speaker. Anyway congratulations are certainly in order to each of the members for their fine attendance support. It has been many years since we have had to enforce our rule of dropping a member for missing four meetings in succession. Keep up the good work!
Hey! What happened to the plans for the annual Live,Inc. sale plans? Just because you officers can stand around where it is warm while the membership gets out and sells in the cold, you don't have to wait until zero weather to get it started. If my memory serves me correctly that has been an October or early November project. Is our Zone Chairman Fred planning it for a Zone project so we can all benefit from the advertising or, Wha Hoppen? P.S. At Board of Directors Meeting last Tuesday the 8th I was informed that there will be no Live, Inc. sale this year, but I'm leaving this in anyway. What do you members think?
Some few issues back your editors stuck their necks out and wrote an article concerning the aspect of the coming election. By the time you read this you will have the results of the national election. When the new president is installed into office in January will we have forgotten what a no good scoundrel he is? No matter who is elected we have written and recorded proof from the other party and candidate that the man we elected is not fit to hold the office. In summing up the things we are hearing now de does not have the intelligence necessary to hold such a position. His background of family, education, experience, moral integrity, party backing, and even religion are in great question. He has promised the voters more benefits, less taxes, no war (cold or hot), no depression and much milk and honey--but he has not offered any solution as to how all these are to be accomplished. In the last days of the campaign even the promises are forgotten and only volumes are written and spoken about what a no good so-and-so the opposition is. How many of you did vote AGAINST someone on the ballot and not for the man for whom you made the X?
Ho-hum, it is the great American political game. Thank heaven we only have to go thru it once every two to four years.
Never start a vast project with half-vast ideas.
It is better to have one man working with you than three men working for you.
PORTRAIT OF A LION------------ HE was born October 27, 1927, the youngest of a family of seven boys and two girls. His boyhood was spent on a farm at Declo, Idaho. There were enough older brothers to take care of the farm work, so it was usually his lot to help with household chores. His close association with his sister probably inspired his love for flower gardening which is one of his hobbies. He attended elementary and high school at Declo and then went to business college in Weiser, Idaho. He spent nearly two years in the army; for fourteen months he was on the Island of Okinawa. Part of the time there he worked as a supply clerk in the supply depot, then he later became Master Sergeant and was in charge of the checking out of Service men who were returning to the states. After returning home he began working in the establishment where he is still employed and has been now for fourteen years. It was there that he met an employee who, in May 1951, became his wife. They have three children, all girls aged 8, 5 and 2 years. He is an avid sports fan and his favorite food is friend shrimp and chicken. He joined the Lion's Club March 14, 1958 and has the distinction of being the only secretary in the Zone who sends his monthly report to International and the Zone officers on the day of the last meeting of the month. Beginning next month, it will be this Lion's duty to furnish to the "Lioneer" editors a Portrait of a Lion, who the next month shall, in turn, furnish a Portrait. This report will be due not later than the 10th of the month. Let me say that information about Lions doesn't come easy--so don't wait until the 9th to begin your portrait.
People (like your editors) are like buttons, they always pop off at the wrong time.
Live, Inc. The Board of Directors of Live, Inc. have set their next board of directors meeting for December 4, 1960 at Counsin Roy's at 11:30 A.M. in Burley. It will be a no host meeting with all interested Lions invited, if you have the cost of the meal. We urge all Burley Lions to make plans to attend, especially the Eyesight Committee members together with the Health and Welfare Committee members. Odds are that you will learn something of this great project of the Idaho Lions and mayhap glean a few ideas that may further your activity in the Burley Club.
FRED ALLEN FOR DISTRICT GOVERNOR REPORT-- The Committee appointed by President Truman to manage the campaign of promoting Lion Fred Allen was to have met and appointed a chiarman. The Chairman was to have delivered to the Lioneer Committee some dope to print in this issue but to date we have heard nothing from them so official announcement will have to wait until the next issue.
Your ladies nite party will be held at the Elks on December 10 at 7:30 and will include fine entertainment, food, and dancing. Chalk this date on your calendar, and don't forget to tell the little lady.
Members of the committee are:
We notice in driving around the project and observing the newly installed markers placed by the Lions, that some are on the south-west corners and some are on the south-east corners. Lion Herman, was it planned that way or are some of the Lion installers left handed?
REPORT FROM EYESIGHT COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN, ROY HARRIS Mrs. Worwood, who is now operating the eyesight screening machine for the Club, reports that the eyesight screening program is now in full swing. Mrs. Worwood says that the Declo Schools were completed prior to November 1st. It is significant to note that of the children screened thus far, there have been 20% of them that were referred for further examinations to their family optometrist. Mrs. Worwood plans to complete the program for this year by the 1st of the year. She is doing a fine job and we do feel that she is to be commended for her part in this program.
LETTER FROM DAUGHTER OF MRS. EDNA SINCLAIR-------
The Lions Club
Dear Mr. Bradley, She misses Burley and her friends terribly and most of all, I believe, she misses the Lions Club. She speaks of the wonderful times she had when she was playing for the Lions. Thank you again for your thoughtfulness. It is really appreciated. Mother enjoys her TV, riding and she goes to church twice a week and she does read once in a while. I can coax her to the piano but she doesn't like the way she plays--and she would love to be back in Burley. She asked me to tell you, she hopes she will be able to write a letter to you in the near future. Sincerely, Mary Louise Boydston
NO REPORT AS PROMISED FROM V.P. GLEN KUNAU--------
Results And Roses The man who wants a garden fair, Or small or very big, With flowers growing here and there, Must bend his back and dig. The things are mighty few on earth That wishes can attain. Whate're we want of any worth We've got to work to gain. It matters not what goal you seek, its secret here reposes: You've got to dig from week to week To get Results or Roses. ---------Edgar A.
